Windows Vista Performance Guide @ AnandTech

Source: AnandTech
_________
While we saw a great deal of changes between our initial review of Windows Vista Beta 2 and Release Candidate 1, it should come as no surprise that there have been far fewer changes between RC1 and the final version we are looking at today. For better or worse, RC1 was the last chance for Microsoft to implement any changes in Vista that were design changes; everything since then has been in the realm of last-minute polish and bug fixes. As a result, certainly Vista is in better shape than ever before, but at the same time it means that design issues we identified have not been resolved.

DudeBoyz is on a distinguished road

I think it's just a wee bit early to be judging it on performance.

Vista did one good thing - they moved the graphics stuff out of the core layers so the interface is much less likely to bring down the whole system, but that will result in slower video performance, which I think is worth the tradeoff. I still wish you could kill and restart the GUI without rebooting, like you can in Linux, but I guess they don't roll like that.

One of the worst things they decided to do was give the shaft to OpenGL. It may take quite a while for Nvidia and ATI to customize and tweak their own OpenGL system that doesn't have to go through DirectX to get to the hardware, assuming Microsoft even allows that.

Vista is gonna take a long time to get optimized, I figure. Maybe 6 months to 1 year from now things will begin to come together, but if I was a gamer in particular, I'd not want to touch Vista until that happens.
