Friends of missing San Francisco Microsoft engineer expand search to Mexico

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The friends of a San Francisco computer scientist who vanished at sea have expanded the hunt to Mexico nearly a week after the Coast Guard called off its own search for the missing sailor.

Computer science colleagues of the Microsoft engineer have been combing satellite images of Mexico's west coast for any sign of Jim Gray, 63, and his 12-metre red-hulled yacht, Tenacious. Volunteers are also distributing posters of Gray and his boat at Mexican marinas.

"There were supplies on the boat and Jim's an able sailor," said Mike Olson, a friend helping to co-ordinate the search. "It's entirely possible he could still be out there."
