You can use 6+6-pin configuration, but if you do not plug 8-pin/6-pin, the ATI Catalyst driver suite will forbid you to enter the "Overdrive Zone".

Thats weird of ATi. Maybe the Retail version from other manufacturers will differ with the power requirements.
