Google is playing an unlikely role in the Iraq war. Its online satellite map of the world, Google Earth, is being used to help people survive sectarian violence in Baghdad.

As the communal bloodshed has worsened, some Iraqis have set up advice websites to help others avoid the death squads.

The feelings of fear, deep sadness and despair must be overwhelming. The sheer horror of life, day after day, week after week and month after month is unimaginable.

The children who survive will be psychologically scarred for life and may never fully recover from the syptoms of post traumatic stress syndrome. Will they grow up feeling grateful for the 'liberation' of their country?
