Awesome freebie! Just runs as a normal app, does its thing and then gets out of the way. Between this and RipIt4Me, life is good for free backup solutions.

Despite the best efforts of "a certain company" in pulling the plug on DVD Decrypter.

A point that needs to be addressed in any "fair use" arguments, fair use permissions are pretty useless if such use is made impossible by technical means.

With Vista still refusing to play my legitimate disks this tool is a God send. What is it with Vista and: your DVD drive does not meet copyright protection requirements? I know it's an old drive but hell I don't own a single copied movie or game, i'd quite happily take a picture of my entire collection and send it to the powers that be if I could simply pop in a movie and watch it. Could almost drive an honest user to piracy at times.

How does the program compare to DVD Decrypter?

The original DVD Decrypter works great with most DVD's still to this day, but it doesn't handle some of the new stuff, like the updated ARccOS garbate.

For those, DVD Decrypter can now be used with RipIt4Me as a front end. RipIt4Me adds support for newer protections, and FixVTS can clean up some stuff after the rip. You need to have DVD Decrypter installed, then get the RipIt4Me install pack and install it over top and it will link RipIt4Me, DVD Decrypter and FixVTS together so they can run in sequence. If you have DVD Shrink installed, you can then click one button to open the ripped DVD directly in DVD Shrink. Works well, but is a tad involved for some users unfamiliar with such things.

DVDFab Decrypter is a simple app that rips updated copy protections free of the DVD and usually works well. Made more for n00bs, but still effective.

I use it w/ AnyDVD, and I do have issues w/ ARccOS. AnyDVD SHOULD be removing it but I then have to use PGCEdit w/ FixVTS. I keep being told by Slysoft that I should purchase DVD Clone too. Yeah..right.

I would not fork out another dime to Slysoft. They are totally screwing customers by charging $30 extra for HD DVD support.

If you have the latest / final versions of DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter already installed, I would recommend grabbing RipIt4Me with the Installer from this page:

http://www.ripit4me.org/download.html

Direct Link to the actual file itself:

http://www.ripit4me.org/RipIt4Me%20Installer.exe

That bundle contains RipIt4Me and FixVTS. If you run the installer executable, it should install both apps and create the internal links to DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. It should create a RipIt4Me icon on the desktop. All you should have to do is run the program from that icon and follow the wizard prompts. You may not need to use FixVTS, and can test that when prompted. It seems to be an excellent and totally free solution.

DVDFab Decrypter is a great free app worth trying as well. It's not quite as tweakable, but for most it will do the job well.

Happy ripping, and down with Slysoft.

Same setup here. If I ever do use DVDFab Decryptor though I usually do full DVD9 rip, and use Shrink to do the rest. I just find that Shrinks extra image features, such as sharpening, and extra analyzing, are far better than DVDFabs.

That is exactly why I still use Shrink, and Nero Recode once in awhile.

Agree 100%. Shrink is still the very best at what it does, and the Re-Author mode is fantastic. You can set the precise start point (after the credits if you want) and the precise end point (after the last song from the soundtrack or what not) and if you leave out the menus, you can just pop the finished disk right in your DVD player and not have to do anything. It's great for kids movies if they are younger. All they need to do is slide in the disk - no need to even use the remote.

If I want to add menus, I use Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 and tell it not to re-code already compliant MPEG-2 files.
