ZIP 4x4 IP phone
Zultys Technologies today announced immediate availability of its ZIP 4x4 IP phone. The ZIP 4x4 is built 100 percent on open technologies and runs on a highly stable real-time Linux operating system. It is compatible with any IP telephony system using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), with support for advanced features such as line-rate Ethernet switching, voice encryption and five-way conferencing.
“Four by four” in the name refers to the phone’s four call appearances and four Ethernet ports. The four call appearances provide four simultaneous incoming or outgoing calls. The four Ethernet ports allow devices such as laptops and PDAs to obtain line-speed connectivity to the LAN through the phone; no other IP phone available today has a built-in switch with more than two Ethernet ports. “The adoption of VoIP in the enterprise will be driven by the availability of products such as the ZIP 4x4, that offer advanced functionality and interoperability with any IP system or platform,” said Brian Strachman, senior analyst, In-Stat/MDR Research. “As SIP becomes a standard of choice for enterprise VoIP applications, products that combine data handling capabilities, security, ease of use and SIP-compliance will not only win out, but perhaps lead the adoption of VoIP in the enterprise.” With Zultys’ ZIP 4x4, organizations can realize the business benefits of simplified installation, provisioning, and management of an IP phone system. Providing both voice and data communications to the desktop requires only a single wire from the network room. For companies with one Ethernet connection already at the desktop, this means deployment of VoIP requires no disruption or rewiring of the network. For new offices, this means greatly reduced cost of wiring a station for both voice and data. Regardless of the type of deployment, the required number of switch ports in the network room ishalved, with direct reductions in cost, power and space. Also beneficial is the rollout process for the ZIP 4x4, which is streamlined so that administrators can provision a phone within minutes. The phone retrieves its software and configuration from a TFTP server and locates SIP servers using DNS-SRV. An end user relocating within the enterprise needs only plug the phone into another Ethernet port and he or she is instantly provided with the same voice and data services. These processes for provisioning and relocation result in minimal effort for moves, adds and changes (MACs). “The release of the ZIP 4x4 again demonstrates that we have a clear understanding of the needs of telecom and datacom user by integrating multiple functions into a single product,” said Iain Milnes, president of Zultys. “Its design, functionality and method of deployment result in increased productivity for both end users and administrators.” Key features and benefits include: - Voice stream encryption for secure conversations, using secure RTP - Speech quality ensured by QoS at the Ethernet and IP layers - “Here I am” feature allows multiple guests to share a phone by logging in to receive calls to their extensions - Support for power over Ethernet according to the IEEE 802.3af standard - Full duplex speaker phone with acoustic echo cancellation - Five-way conferencing of inbound or outbound calls in which parties can be easily added or removed - Dial by URL or by phone number - Standard 2.5 mm headset jack - Ergonomic design with the look and feel of a business phone - Buttons for all commonly used functions - Multiple LEDs (including message waiting indicator) instantly indicate phone status - High-contrast LCD with the ability to tilt to suit the viewing angle - Access to the last 32 incoming and 32 outgoing calls - Address book capable of storing up to 100 entries - Built-in calculator provides convenient computations either during a call or when the phone is idle - Four call appearances for support of four simultaneous calls - Four 10/100 Base-T Ethernet circuits capable of switching traffic at wire speed Earlier this year, Zultys announced the release of the MX1200, the world’s first enterprise media exchange. Also based completely on open technologies, including SIP, the MX1200 fully integrates voice over IP (VoIP), data, video and fax into a single, compact 2U box. The ZIP 4x4 is a natural extension of the company’s strategy to offer a suite of fully interoperable and easy to use VoIP products to the enterprise. Available in black or white, the ZIP 4x4 is competitively priced at $400 and includes the software, ac adapter, headset, and Ethernet cable.
