Viacom Sues YouTube for $1 Billion

MTV owner Viacom Inc. said Tuesday it has sued YouTube and its corporate parent Google Inc. in federal court for alleged copyright infringement and is seeking more than $1 billion in damages.

Viacom claims that the more than 160,000 unauthorized video clips from its cable networks, which also include Comedy Central, VH1 and Nickelodeon, have been available on the popular video-sharing Web site.

Most of the viacom stuff has been taken off youtube. I can't see how it's feasible to regulate a site like youtube except for every single video being posted to be checked by youtube staff and that's certainly not an option. I really don't see what else google could have done.

I bet they wouldn't have sued for a Billion if Google didn't own Youtube either. Not that that matters but I'd bet anyway.

Yeah, considering google ended with like 11.5 Billion in cash last year... it jsut seems to be open season to get a chunk of the change.
