Takes system resources, if you have HTTP blocking enabled, it tends to block useful sites, which must then be whitelisted.

Depends on what you do, where you live, and your thoughts on the matter. I generally don't bother with it personally.

I just download TV shows and Linux stuff. Sometimes some game demos. So I'm not pirating music or movies, so maybe I'm okay.

If I ain't doin' nuthin' wrong, I ain't got nuthin' to worry about.

For your info, if you are downloading TV shows that have been broadcast on any public, cable, payperview or satellite stations, then you are doing more wrong than you think. These shows are produced and marketed by the same companies that make movies and the MPAA treat the illegal downloads of such shows the same as they do movies. I have seen just as many people getting infringement letters for the latest episode of the Simpsons or Lost, etc., as I have for the latest movie or music releases.

We can't get to in depth in this thread or on these forums or it will be closed and we could get in trouble for talking about it.

Hey Zelig,
What type of connection do you have that would be able to download that much data????

I don't get that. Shows broadcast over the free airwaves are free to view. I pay for cable so whatever channels I have I should be able to watch them with no problem. If I was to convert to a digital cable setup, I could use the On Demand feature for free too.

If you are legally allowed to record the shows yourself, you should be able to view the show over the internet, right?

I am just telling you how it is.
They want to be able to package DVD's of full seasons of there shows and sell them for even more money and still have people to sell them to.

I think dudeboyz is talking about the streaming video from authorized sites gsx, not infringing video.

Peerguardian is an application that blocks a plethora of IP addresses and sometimes entire networks in order to help hinder "detection" by "The Man" for doing various things. It is also useful if you are concerned about being hacked or if you are one of those people who are paranoid about "The Man". Good application one way or the other, but it does tend to block quite a few useful websites.

Back to the topic at hand however I have received one of those e-mails from AOL back in it's hayday for downloading too many things back when you could get everything off of a website somewhere. The same kind of thing is happening now except in a different form.

Currently I have comcast and they have never limited our bandwidth use and it is honestly a pretty reliable service.

And the industry fought it with a vengeance for many years. The fight is still going on with TIVO and set top DVD recorders. If you are watching them on sites like youtube and the likes, then it is not you that has to worry. These sites are getting sued every day and will eventually be shut down if they do not remove the protected content.
I agree with what you are saying about TV shows. If it was OK to download TV shows legally then wouldn't it be Ok to download any movie that was broadcast on cable or TV.

All of this talk falls into the bandwidth hog category. The only way anybody could download enough data to be considered a bandwidth hog would be to download data they shouldn't be downloading. There are only so many game demos and linux versions to download.

University connection, not sure what it is exactly, tried to look it up, but couldn't find any good information. Cost is $37.50 per month for this connection, wireless everywhere on campus, access to the university computers and phone service for my room.

Average speeds:

I tested from that speed test .net site. That's pretty slick graphically.

2893 kbps down
718 kbps up

Not to the spec, but hey, I'm pretty happy.

I get 2500 kbps down and 680 up and chose my ISP specifically for their unlimited usage (which I make quite good use of). If my ISP ever put limits on I'd cancel immediately.

Man, that site is cool. Not very accurate but it puts things on perspective, testing download file from the USA. It is a helpful reminder of how cool this whole Internet is.

You mean that testing site? Yeah - I normally don't go for fancy frue-frue stuff when it comes to benching, but it looks wicked.
