Blu-ray Aims to Replace DVD in Three Years

Source: DailyTech
__________
Consumers wanting to take home this year’s best picture, be it Babel or The Departed, have the choice of DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. According to Frank Simonis, European chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association, consumers three years from now will only look to Blu-ray.

Reuters quoted Simonis during the CeBIT technology trade show in Germany as saying, “Within three years it will just be Blu-ray.”

3 years all Blu-Ray!!! .... not a chance in hell look how long it took to phase out VHS after DVD's become the norm

for BluRay to do this the price of players would have to drop to the current price of DVD players so that every home can have one at the current 300 quid ( average ) for a blue ray player Ordinary Joe Blogs like me wont buy them

and dont think the PS3 is going to flood the market again at 400+ theres no way i will buy one

the price has to drop a LOT first and even then it would probably take 5 or 6 years to be the only one available

way to optamistic ill be sticking with DVD for the next couple of years unless there is a radical restructering on price

This is just propaganda. They say this so that people that don't know better will go out and buy blu ray instead of anything else, since that would be the safe move. All lies.

I'd say 50:50 would be optimistic, unless the price falls considerably in that time, after all, you can now buy a DVD player for the price of one (new release) movie, and a DVD recorder for tha same price that VCR used to be.

I'd say it was falling prices, rather than technical superiority, that enabled DVD to erase VHS.

I read this the other day. Sony has fallen asleep at the wheel. It's gonna take a lot to convince me to get rid of a perfectly good DVD library and replace it with Blu-Ray.

I plan on getting an up-conversion DVD player once I get an HDTV.

Never mind to really notice the difference you'll need two things. 1. A really big HDTV 2. The recapture & post production work on the HD media needs to be perfect. This goes for HD DVD or Blu-Ray.

No one is saying replace your DVD collection for Blu-ray or even HD-DVD. If the movie is made in HI-DEF why not buy it in Blu-ray or HD-DVD?

Necrosis: To say you hate Blu-ray just because of this is stupid. The DVD Forum does the same crap. So don't think that they are any better.

It's my opinion so it's not stupid. To me it's stupid to try to force a format down my throat when there is other choices. It's stupid when you have a company by the name of Sony that thinks they can do no wrong. Have you ever wondered why some studios have not went w/ Blu-Ray? Once you can answer me that question then you can judge who/what is stupid.

there needs to be two things happen first before i even consider purchasing a blu-ray player:

1. price

2. standard DVD support for my current movies.

What studios? Those is only two, Universal and Weinstein Company, that don't support Blu-ray. Viacom and TimeWarner support both formats. For studios I wouldn't count the subsidiaries since the major companies own several. Sony is not the only company to support Blu-ray. There is over one hundred companies behind Blu-ray. How is Sony forcing you to buy Blu-ray? Now, I don't always agree with Sony. I always thought that the UMD format was a joke especially for movies. Blu-ray is probably the best format they have developed compared to the others.

Still doesn't answer why they are not w/ Blu-Ray. Yes I know other companies are supporting it but it's still Sony's baby. There is no point in trying to deny that since they are w/ Sony to share technology & to have rights to Blu-Ray. It's a matter of company ethics, greed & praising Sony's movie studio. How are they trying to force me? It's this thing called a PS3. Need I say any more? For me to support three things would need to happen. 1. Sony no longer has a movie studio. 2. PS3 Blu-Ray should of been an add on. 3. No reason for it to cost more than HD DVD.

i thought you could easily play a standard DVD in a BR dvd player.... It'd be stupid not to support that..

Actually i'd hope that the upconversion and progessive scan for standard DVDs would be built in and fully supported in BR players..

IMO, doesn't really matter because this is still all first generation HD/BR disc and players.... at least 3 generations before i think they'd have a viable solution... 3 years.... hey it's not to far fetched.

Sorry guys, but here are a few facts for you :

fact #1 : the cheapest BR player is the PS3 at $499.
fact #2 : an A2 HD DVD player can be delivered to your door for $349
fact #3 : Toshiba just secured India and China as 3rd party HD DVD manufacturers, which will bring prices lower than $300 MSRP by end of this year
fact #4 : the next most affordable stand-alone BR player will be the Sony BDP-S300 at $599 MSRP, coming in june (unless it's delayed)
fact #5 : BDA has already declared the war won more than 3 times... Their propaganda is so out of line that they now declare being able to erase DVD's lead in less than 3 years...
fact #6 : PS3 was also supposed to be the slaughter machine of video game consoles. So far it has not even succeeded in slaughtering HD DVD, with a BR attach rate estimated at 22%, and is performing way below expectations in the video game segment
fact #7 : movie studios will go where the money is. If it ends up being HD DVD who performs a lot better as far as attach rate, the BR exclusive studios will go neutral
fact #8 : nobody has a crystal ball, even if they'd like you to believe so

Hasn't Sony stopped production on the 20gig PS3 as well?

Which would take care of # 1.

and TBH even at 350 pounds thats still 700+ dollars and thats way to expensive for a BluRay player regardless

until ( and if ever) the PS3 drops to 250 pounds i wont buy one i hate to say it but for the fist time i am considering an Xbox 360 and until now that was unheard of

thing is i would love a PS3 and BlueRay i just wont consider that price .... ever
