Windows Easy Transfer is all WET
Source: ExtremeTech
________ Here I sit, brokenhearted...but don't worry, there's nothing scatological about this situation. Unless you'd like to join me in calling Windows Easy Transfer (WET) a piece of something warm and steamy. If you read my column on upgrading the everyday PC two weeks ago, you know that I was about to embark upon a massive migration/upgrade/upheaval of my primary system. My game system is a couple generations old, but it's much newer and faster than my main system, which is more than four years old. I finally started the replacement—pulling my main system out of service and replacing it with my gaming box—yesterday. I installed a fresh, clean Vista Ultimate on the game system. That went splendidly. I installed drivers for all the hardware that was coming with that system from my workbench to my desk (yes, I played games at my bench). I installed a bunch of apps I knew I'd need, like AIM and Zune and Microsoft Office 2007. Then, with almost everything else taken care of, I started to migrate my email settings and messages, and my important files (stuff like Word templates, current articles and performance charts, photos, and so on. I thought I'd give Windows Easy Transfer a try. So far I'm fairly pleased with Vista, so why shouldn't I be with that particular component? |

I agree. The process takes too long, and gave me many problems over ownership of files and documents.

from one time experience the "file and settings transfer wizard" build into windows XP does a fine job - can't understand how they'd take a massive step back
