Solid State put to the test – Team 16GB 2.5-inch IDE Solid State Drive @ Tweaktown

If you have ever experienced data loss on your computer, please put your hand up in the air now. Keep your hand raised, if the data you lost were so critical, that it almost made you pull the hair out of your scalp. Most of us who have been using computers for an extended amount of time have probably more than likely experienced hard drive failures or complete death, at least one time before.

Highlights the current state very well, flash has fast access, but slow transfer compared to any current hard drive, and a much hugher caost per megabyte.

disappointed not to see:
1. A windows boot time test (can the 0-seek make up for the slower transfer?)
2. A same drive copy, where the 0-seek could well tip the balance

If they want big scores, from the 16 chips, they need more channels - The speed would seem to tally with a dual channel flash controller - and I thought USB flash duals were already pushing 30 MB/s (read).

You do release you could make a raid array of these for a larger faster drive.....
You can get 1 GB models for VERY cheap
You can use them in desktops!

I'm temped to make one insto a super swap file drive

The RAM card would be better as a swapfile, if you are at a system memory limit but have even larger working sets http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2480

How many cycles are the current generation of flash chips good for, and how long before Intel's new stuff shakes it up again?

By the time devices based on current flash technology, with the inherent flaws of slow write and write cycle lifetime, start to make an impact, we'll probably already be eagerly awaiting the next generation based on Intel PCM or Motorola MRAM.
