Windows Vista = Windows Me II?

Source: ZDNet
___________
Is Windows Vista going to be a repeat of the Windows Me marketing and sales disaster that Microsoft experienced back in 2000?

Over the past few weeks I've come across a number of articles on tech sites that are putting Windows Vista and Windows Me in the same sentence. Not good. Others are more blatant and are directly comparing Vista to Me. That's really bad and not the kind of comparison that is going to fuel sales.

Yah, I don't get it. It's not a REVOLUTIONARY OS, but it's a decent OS, and there are SOME things I like ... I don't think, if you have XP, that you need to upgrade, but there's no reason to not get it w/ a new PC.

vista is very pretty... but way overrated.

vista is copping the same treatment as windows me, because it is getting the same feedback from when windows me got released. basicaly a repeat in faults and hiccups

i'm a pc technician, and i've had my share of people highly impressed with windows me when it was released, and same with vista.

but the ratio (i believe) for happy:sad is just 1:4

and that's a huge ratio

Windows ME would crash horribly alot of the time, and it'd produce random errors on machines that were apparently not agreeing with it.

ontop of that, usually after a clean install of ME, it either worked or it didn't usually.

All the vista issues i've seen thus far are PURE Capability/Supported issues. Strickly hardware limitations showing there true color, and the very FACT that manufactures are REFUSING to support there shit job they did in the first place.

When the attitude about it is "We don't support vista on that product, BUY A NEW, from us " and then try to rape you in some metephorical fashion that know what is usually aware of.

Every, EVERY machine i've built has FULL vista support within it's Hardware capabilities, Most of ALL the limitations hardware wise stops emediately @ ATI due to using ALL ATI hardware with a few nvidia exceptions, even then, the nvidia solutions available at the time don't have vista support.

Beyond forcing the VISTA supplied driver down the VGA Adapters throat, just to get more resolutions and better overall performance when using older then radeon 9500 series, there isn't all that much anyone can do.

BTW, i've used vista now on a Intel P3 700mhz with 384mb of ram and a 20gb HD, Radeon 7000, yes it'll install (if forced) and it does run reasonably well considering. Not going to have Aero, but damn it'll work quite smoothly.

As for crashing, I've YET to see vista crash where vista was the cause, the only EVER BSODs i've seen is when ATI's 7.3's were causing it. In one instance, i did however see a case where a specific model HP Printer would cause vista to lockup before even starting to boot almost, if the printer was unplugged, then let vista load and then plug it again things would work fine once more.

So far 0 of my machines are having vista issues, and Dell, Compaq, HP, etc. are having nightmares, while everyone is standing around blaming microsofts OS.

This is getting ridiculous.... Do we care about marketing and sales? Or are we more interested in the actual OS itself?
If anything, Vista as an OS is more like XP vs. 2000.

In many ways, I do hope VISTA becomes a success. What I did try of it under the Beta releases, I liked. BUT, driver support was atrocious!

My own personal opinion is that people should not make VISTA their primary OS until at least the release of SP1. Hopefully....HOPEFULLY....by then driver support will have matured and things that are now causing problems will be a thing of the past.

But, comparing it to ME I think is a big stretch.

Wait, there are still BSOD in Vista? I would love for the OS to not completely crash when encounters a problem, or is this only a feature of Linux? Why after all these years hasn't MS managed to deal with it?

What a load of a crap and If i remember correctly the same BS was being released when XP hit the market.

Vista off course has it's problems, just as XP did when it was released, because it takes some time for drivers and program to be updated for it.

Comparing Vista with BS is nothing more then a lame try to get easy hits, you know, the same fear/scandal tactics that the modern press uses today.

Agreed.

Although Vista does seem like its a warmed over version of XP with a resource hog DRM and other useless features. Upgrading hardware should give you a faster machine, not a machine that lets you run your new OS, thats what most people's problem with Vista is.

The upside of Vista is better security (supposedly, since the animated cursor bug bit Vista as well), a "more efficient" DX10 driver architecture, and some pretty gizmos (not in Basic version).

The downside is a raft of compatibility issues, with hardware and software that is not necessarily in the "old as the hills" category. Few of the plus points are actually delivering anything worthwhile yet, due to the lamentable condition of Vista drivers.

I think I'd say that Vista is an OS for new machines, upgrading is probably more pain than it's worth. Maybe worth looking again after a SP1 update and a few more versions of driver development, plus cheaper DX10 cards.

All the downsides you mention are not MSs fault, more the software and hardware companies faults. I personally like the advantages of Vista and must say, while it isn't going to replace XP, it's still a decent OS even at launch.

It's no ME, that's for sure!

what are the upsides of vista exactly? its not enough to say oh it works ok or even good, its supposed to offer something innovative and over and above what xp does. and don't say its gui because i have a vista transformation pack installed on my xp so i've got the same aero effects and interface anyway and for free.

Same aero affects? So is your background Direct3D accelerated? No, as it isn't possible in XP. IMO that is the best feature added.

Upside of Vista from my point of view:

Aero
Better startmenu
Better window programs, like firewall, Sync center, Mail (all though Thunderbird is better), more secure IE7 (again i prefer Firefox, but not everyone likes Firefox).
Better process-manager
Better network-center
Microsoft update is running through a program, which makes it a lot faster
A fine sidebar (i know there is free alternatives)
Sound can be controlled for each program
Navigation in Windows Explorer
Quick shutdown from the start menu
Quick program launch from the start menu
Quick search from the start menu
Better ALT-TAB feature
Easier to use a lot of things in Vista, due to better control panel
Easy install, support for USB
More secure networking, eg. RDP from Vista to Vista
More secure overall

And Vista is faster to use if you have 2 gigs of RAM, it does feel faster in a lot of things.

Downside:
You have to have 2 gigs (although 2gigs of ram is pretty cheap today)
The gfx drivers needs to mature (ATI is there, Nvidia is getting there)
Some programs needs some updates before they work perfectly under Vista (Only app giving me problems is a poker client from PokerChamps and all it does, is go into non-aero mode)

The search is amazing. I keep forgetting to mention how awesome it is. Simple type part of the program in there, press return and bam the program opens.

Also The fact that you can control SPDIF volume for ANY soundcard is a great improvment.

The included driver packs are amazing! Like said previously, some crap that I don't have drivers for like a webcam from 6 years ago installed no problemo.

Saying linux doesn't crash is a lie... I love the stalled boots, half boots, and boots that won't even come all the way up due to a piece of hardware that I just installed (dual boots fine in xp). And don't get me started on macs

Someone mentioned and it is the greatest thing ever... is controlling sound per application! Especially awesome if you have a movie on your desktop and you want it to play louder than anything else! go go dreamscene!

I don't understand this seperate sound per application thing. How is that any different from XP? Each application that has sound has its own volume anyhow. For example just few min ago I was playing a game online with average volume while in the background I listen to mp3s with my vuplayer application on a lower volume. If I wanted I could also have video player playing a file at a different volume too. I use XP.

That's not true. Firstly, Windows XP doesn't have a volume control for its own sounds (if you have any sounds turned on in XP.) Then there are plenty of apps that play sounds that don't have a volume control: instant messenger apps, e-mail apps, web browsers, and plenty of other stuff that plays sounds to notify you of things.

For me, turnning down the instant messenger alone is a boon. Oh I just remembered how Sound Forge has made me jump out of my chair countless times! Then there's all the stupid flash animations on web sites....

It's a decent try to emulate aero and cool for people who doesn't want to change. But it's not perfect and the real thing it's a lot prettier actually.

Well if a messenger or a browser (browser, really?) don't have their own controls, then that's not a big problem IMO. Oh well.
