Hewlett-Packard planning new iPaq handheld

Hewlett-Packard looks set to expand its line of iPaq handhelds with the introduction of a new device, the iPaq h2200.

The h2200, which is manufactured by Taiwanese hardware maker High Tech Computer, is based on either a 200MHz or 400MHz XScale processor from Intel and will be available with at least 64MB of SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) and 32MB of ROM, according to a draft version of the user manual filed with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Because the device uses Bluetooth wireless networking connectivity, HTC is required to obtain FCC approval, which has been granted for the h2200, before it can be sold in the U.S. The launch of a new device typically follows within a few months of FCC approval, although in some cases this can take longer. In rare instances, an approved device can be canceled by the manufacturer and never make it to market.

A spokeswoman for HP said that she could not confirm or deny information about the h2200 nor could she comment beyond that.

Measuring 4.5 inches by 2.75 inches by 0.63 inches (16 millimeters) and weighing 5.49 ounces, the h2200 incorporates a transflective TFT (thin film transistor) LCD (liquid crystal display) with a resolution of 240 pixels by 320 pixels and support for 64,000 colors, a SD (Secure Digital) card slot, a Compact Flash card slot and an infrared port.

Selected models will also include Bluetooth and a Universal Remote Control that can be used to control home entertainment devices, according to the manual.

Based on Microsoft's Pocket PC software, the h2200 includes applications like Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Windows Media Player, Pocket Internet Explorer and Microsoft Reader.

Information on when the h2200 will be released or how the device will be priced was not immediately available. Sumner Lemon
