Music Piracy Crackdown Nets College Kids

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - At first, Sarah Barg thought the e-mail was a scam. Some group called the Recording Industry Association of America was accusing the University of Nebraska-Lincoln sophomore of illegally downloading 381 songs using the school's computer network and a program called Ares. The letter said she might be sued but offered her the chance to settle out of court.

Barg couldn't imagine anyone expected her to pay $3,000—$7.87 per song—for some 1980s ballads and Spice Girls tunes she downloaded for laughs in her dorm room.

Besides, the 20-year-old had friends who had downloaded thousands of songs without repercussion.

"Obviously I knew it was illegal, but no one got in trouble for it," Barg said.

But Barg's perspective changed quickly that Thursday in March, when she called student legal services and found out the e-mail was no joke and that she had a pricey decision to make.

Zeph is an unknown quantity at this point

Why are they going after the people downloading instead of those giving it out again?

They do this because on those P2P programs the people downloading are also sharing the songs, there is no single uploader who is the source of the piracy.

They knew it was illegal and got caught but what isn't right is the fee they have to pay. Why should someone be charged $8 a song when those same songs could be bought legally off iTunes etc for 99cents? The RIAA pulls these fees out of their ass and the threats work.

So they start to crack on kids who download music and games but they don't bother trying to catch the (no offence) black people who mug and kill people (again no offence to anyone who is black but looking at the government figures 80% of crimes are from black people). noobs.

It's the fine for stealing. Disregarding any morals or quality differences, there isn't much incentive to buy songs legally if one could steal them, and if caught, pay only the same amount as if they were bought legally.

Point 1: I'm not sure where you get your information, but according to the US Department of justice, 52.1% of homicides are commited by black offenders.

Point 2: What does it matter if blacks commit 99% of crimes? Simply focus on eliminating the crimes, it doesn't matter what colour skin the offenders have.

Point 3: This is the RIAA we're talking about. Stated by themselves, their mission "is to foster a business and legal climate that supports and promotes [their] members' creative and financial vitality." They don't have any involvement in things unrelated to music, such as muggings and homicides.

The RIAA makes up those fees as they go. They could sue for $5000 per song if they wished but then they'd never see the money, this is what they used to do all the time. By using a lower fee many people will pay up rather than fight it (which they should).

No comment on what Adolf, er Nick, said.

The RIAA would say that's the same as stealing the same model car you have in your driveway.
