HomePlug speeds 200 Mbps through your power lines
Source: TG Daily
_______ Los Angeles (CA) - Most computer users have dealt with computer cables strewn around the house, but the HomePlug PowerLine Alliance hopes to get rid of some of the mess by piggybacking networking signals on top of regular power lines. At the WinHEC conference in Los Angeles, HomePlug reps showed us how homeowners can easily stream multiple high definition video signals through regular wall sockets. Typically home computers are networked with Ethernet cables and routers. While this inexpensive technology has been around for decades, HomePlug says their stuff is just as fast and is simple to set up. All you need is a wall power adapter that bridges your Ethernet cable to the power circuits in your home. Every networked device needs an adapter, but HomePlug did show off a concept PC that overlaid the network signals on the power cable. No external adapter or Ethernet cable is required in this case. Reps said these computers could be available by Christmas. |

so...is this going to be priced competitively against Cable and DSL? Undercut them and force them to improve prices/speeds? Or be priced higher due to the convenience of less wires(plug and play) and to reclaim money spent on R&D? I guess we'll find out within the year, assuming it isn't delayed of course.

It already is in Cincinnati. We've had BPL for a couple of years now, and it's helping to keep the Cable, and DLS providers 'honest'.
I just wish they would get it available in my part of town. The D/l isn't all that impressive: 3M, but the U/L is also 3M and THAT is gonna be good for online gaming. I'm currrently on DSL and they have boosted the speed twice, with no $$ increase just to keep people from going to BPL. I've gone from 768K/384K to 5M/1M in that time, and still pay the same 39.95/mo.

Nice, we have a cable monopoly here, capital of nebraska and 1 cable provider. BS! I hope it comes here and keeps them honest. Everyone else charges $35-40 for cable, here is $50 for cable internet.
