Tight supply of some Nvidia and ATI chips to be resolved
Tight supply has been reported for certain products offered by Nvidia and ATI Technologies for clients targeting the clone sector, as the two leading graphics chip suppliers are accustomed to releasing chips to OEM companies first, graphics card makers said.
Products on the tight supply list included some chips in Nvidia’s GeForce4 Ti series and the Radeon 9700 and Radeon 9500 chips from ATI. However, such a supply/demand imbalance is believed to be a short-term condition, as the market is entering the traditional off-peak season in the second quarter and both companies have scheduled to start shipping new chips in volume in the next few weeks. According to sources, starting this month, Nvidia is expected to begin volume shipments of its GeForce FX 5200 (NV34) graphics chips, which will soon be followed by the company’s GeForce FX 5600 (NV31) and NV35. ATI was also said to have decided to move up the volume shipment schedule of the Radeon 9600 (RV350) from June to the end of April. Although the change is believed to be ATI’s attempt to prepare itself for the forthcoming competition from Nvidia’s NV35, it should also alleviate the currently tight chip supply. The tight supply has been mainly caused by companies’ much more reserved projections of market demand. Given the inventory problem in the PC market in 2002 and fast product transition in the graphics chip sector, both Nvidia and ATI appeared more conservative in placing orders for the first quarter. As s result, with OEM companies acquiring large numbers of chips to build up inventory in the first quarter, clone-oriented own-brand card makers have been left with more limited chip supply. Yeah, fucking ATI. I've been waiting a week for circuit city to get me my 9700Pro. No circuit city in my area has them. Nor does the online circuit city store. Thank god I bought that service plan on my old $279.99 minidisc player.
