Microsoft has released an updated version of DirectX for June, although it isn't clear whether the update is just for DirectX 9.0c or for DirectX 10 on Vista as well. Regardless of this, it is still recommended that Vista users update their systems because Vista will benefit from any DirectX 9.0c fixes when playing DirectX 9 games. The web installer is only for Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions), whilst the redistributable version will also work with Vista.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/directx/aa937789.aspx - release notes (for April) suggest that compiling shaders for 1.x Pixel shader targets is not supported, someusers on other sites not a performance loss with April compared to February on older (presumable shader 1.x / DX8 model) cards

Can't fimd the other reference, but it appears the shader compilers are unified D3D9/10 in the June release.

It appears to update some DX10 components as well.

what's the difference between the Redistributable and the web installer?...which is the preferred download method?

The Redistributable contains all the files (around 53Mb) which will be savable.Ideal to have for future formats.

The web installer is much smaller and requires internet access (starts from 44kb).This will then only download and install the latest updates detected from you're last dx install.Aimed for those who may still be on 56k modems.

Careful with the web installer!! Many including me have gotten their validation screwed up by this update. My Aero has been turned off and i cant play Halo 2, it's saying it's no longer "genuine." MS is looking into the problem, but be careful with this update...
