Notebook chipsets and CPUs—five years ago, nobody on a tech site would have cared much about the topic. The PC scene was all about performance desktops, and notebooks were still relatively underfeatured, underpowered, and overpriced. Nowadays, however, it's a different story. PC desktop sales have been in a year-over-year decline since late 2005, while laptops have posted double-digit year-over-year sales gains. Taiwanese notebook makers Quanta and Compal Electronics had record earnings in the first quarter of this year, and Apple's notebook sales were up a whopping 94 percent in that same period. Laptop hardware is even making its way into more and more non-laptop form factors, like Apple's iMac and Mac Mini.
