Michael Moore advocates universal health care, but what does he think about free movies?

The controversial filmmaker will have to deal with that question after a report in Advertising Age that "Sicko," his new documentary on the failings of the U.S. health care system, has been pirated and is widely available for free downloading on the Web.

considering that films like POTC 3 Spiderman 3 shrek etc etc are all available through *cough* sites pretty much the day they are released Why is this one considered news piracy is as common as the flu these days

Hell you can watch streaming video of most movies, i mean i've already seen a Fanastic Four (2) silver surfer stream available

A bunch of reasons including:

a) He hid a copy in Canada cuz he thought the Feds would seize it over his Cuba trip
b) He was worried he couldn't show it ... now obviously he at least doesn't have to worry about no one seeing it
c) the movie is controversial and thus topical.

yeah but its piracy we are talking about a common thing it wouldnt even surprise me to find out that he was the one who leaked it

The choice of what is and isn't news is more based on if it's topical than anything else. This is a high level of interest in the film and that's what makes it topical. Plus, as a moderator, I felt it would create a lot of discussion (mostly around the film and the US health care industry, not about whether or not it was news)

There are big differences in the versions of movies that are widely available. When a true copy of a movie is leaked or planted is a whole lot different than a copy recorded with a camera by a second rate pirate. From what I understand 90% of which are not even watchable. This news is more about the actual content that was leaked then it is about piracy. From what I hear he really got under the skins of some pretty important people " personal definition of importance applies" during the making of this.

I've seen it and it's his best movie so far (though time will tell how many facts he twisted) and I think there's two possibilties for this movie being leaked:

The first is a Moore hater (there are many) got ahold of it and wanted to leak it so he'd get less money from the box office. I know of one Moore hater that already uploaded it to Youtube only to have it quickly deleted.

The second could be that Moore or a supporter leaked it. He has spoken in favor of movie piracy in the past, this would create much more buzz when people say "oh have you seen Michael Moore's new movie?" then they go see it at the theatre (cause most people won't download or don't know how).

I liked this movie and I feel bad for Americans who may have an accident or illness and greedy insurance companies ruin their lives rather than help them.

This is a DVD leak weeks before the film is even out. This is very rare for high profile movies.

Actually from the little bit of loaded (i thought it was going to be a total farce, who the hell is able to get it uploaded that quick? )..... if it were played back on a SDTV, it would probably look slightly worse then poor analog cable which isn't all that bad....

The thing is, if I'm gonna watch a bad movie I want to watch it in 5.1 sound with the biggest tv available that way at least some aspects will be enjoyable. When you watch a movie stream or some downloaded copy it had better be a damn good flick or there's no redeeming qualities

it has become rare i agree about 3 years ago it was common for Pre release screeners to be available weeks before the movie release ( i recall seeing a perfect copy of Blade , fast and the furious etcweeks before the cinema release ) not sure if they stopped doing it because of piracy or found a newer method

lately though screeners seem to be on the rise again and true copies are appearing again with excellent sound and pic quality

i still think that it's most likley somone from the Micheal Moore camp that has released this

All you have to do is listen to the story about the woman and her daughter on the DVD to know America needs a change.

Would we allow a fire department to every time they get a call for a house fire, when they arrive at the house determine whether or not this is going to affect the fire department's bottom line. We wouldn't allow that, would we? When someone is wheeled into a hospital, that question should never be asked. That is an immoral question amongst a – in a humane society to ask that question, where is the profit here? How will it affect our bottom line? How do we make money off this sick person? I mean, this doesn't look good, folks. It doesn't look good to the rest of the world and it won't look good to the anthropologists who dig us up hundreds of years from now.

As for the healthcare system, I doubt it's worse than it is over here. You must pay around 10% of your income for healthcare, bu if you ever need hospitalization, you'll still have to pay for everything (you'll be toldd that the hospital does not have the medicine you require because the funds ran out) and bribe every doctor and nurse to get _any_ attention. Compared to this, the US system is very healthy/logical: you get what you pay for.

US system is terrible. Hard working families can have their entire lives ruined just from an accident or disease. Just look at that one family in the movie they had insurance but the deductable costs kept adding up and forced them to sell their house and live in their daughters rec room.

Michael Moore's movies have a history of affecting little or no change so I don't expect this will lead to movement towards Universal Health Care in America. However, Americans are so brainwashed in thinking Socialized medicine is 3rd rate and inferior to their system that maybe this movie will at least wake them up when they see Canada, UK and France's quality system in action.

I suppose thats true but I don't really use health care though I'm sure I will if I get older or in an accident. If I get ill I take care of it without using the insurance. Thing is, if we did have a universal health care system I'm pretty sure it would be pretty bad. From what I've heard Britain has a horrible universal health care system. Regarding Michael Moore, he looks at one side, the side he wants you to take and makes a video that doesn't even aproach the other side and its benefits.

There is more to it than just comparing no health care towards universal health care. It is also about reasonable and affordable health care. Individuals and corporations alike have turned the art of heeling into a cutthroat business that has one bottom line, and that is money. You truly have to be affected by the way things are in this country if a person falls through the cracks of the American dream before you understand. The government doesn't want middle or upper class America to have sympathy or understand how hard it is to be poor and sick in this country.
