Video is everywhere these days. Whether you're watching grainy uploaded videos on YouTube, renting the latest DVD movies from Netflix, or plunking down a chunk of change for a high-definition disc player—the world is crazy about video.
So it's natural that people will want some way of playing video on their PCs. It wasn't all that long ago that playing a DVD movie was a fairly serious challenge for CPUs and graphics cards, but now that's all passé. As we'll see shortly, the PC is a great way to watch DVD movies. Increasingly, though, the emphasis is on high-definition video, which has already arrived for PCs in the form of high-definition optical drives like the Lite-On LH-2B1S Blu-ray drive we recently reviewed. We're also starting to see a generation of CableCard-capable PCs that will allow Windows Vista owners to watch protected, premium content as supplied by the cable providers. And it's quite easy to get over-the-air HD broadcasts to your PC.
