Bill Gates not the world’s richest person anymore

Source: TG Daily
_______
According to Sentido Comun, Carlos Slim Helu has surpassed Bill gates as the world’s wealthiest person. The Mexican magazine estimates Slim to be worth about $67.8 billion, while Gates is estimated at “just” $59.2 billion.

Mexican magazine says a Mexican is the richest man alive...oh ya, that's credible.

It better not be true or I'm tearing all those Bill Gates posters off my wall. Second richest just don't cut it bud. Maybe if he'd stop giving all his cash to charities that #1 spot would be his.

I believe it. Last year he was up to 50 billion, and was ranked the 3rd richest man in the world by Forbes last year. It's estimated that he's pulling in about 20 billion a year.

Mind you, how exactly he got all the money is the big question. The guy's a monopolist, owns almost all the rights to wired phone service down there, and about 75% of the cellular service as well. And with almost all of Mexicos politicians.. including the President of Mexico being his 'good friends' who's to stop him? Hell.. Slim is the guy that's really in charge down there, and not the Mexican government.

I just counted my penny jar and I think i'm going to have to declare my hand at this stage, I guess i'll just have to let them battle it out and fall into line outside the top 2.
When I say outside the top 2 I mean top 2billion and then some

0.

See, if he does what 'Slim' does, and hordes his money instead of giving crap loads of it away to charity, he'd be in first place again. But noooo.. he goes and listens to his woman, Melinda, and let's her talk him into giving HIS money away.

I mean, Bill, what were you thinking, man? Now you're in second place! Start hording again!

Not just Mexico. He's got his hands in all sorts of things, including half a dozen cellular companies across Latin America. He's got his fingers in telephone, cellular, cable and satellite TV, all forms of ISPs across Latin America (anyone remember a little company called Prodigy? guess who bought, and then moved them to Mexico?), and many other things including companies in the US such as CompUSA (he owns most of it). It's insane how much stuff this guy either owns, in whole or part, or is chairman of.

When you think of Bill Gates you think Microsoft, but when you look up 'Slims' resume, what he owns or is part of, Gates is a lightweight. Hell.. not even Gates has government protection when it comes to his M$ monopoly, but Slim does... and his monopoly is a hell of a lot more powerful.

In addition to what Tipstaff mentioned, Mexico does have money, it's GDP is comparable to Canada's, in the $1 trillion range, which places them both just out of the top-10 countries in the world for total GDP.

I wonder how much that 1Trillion would go up if the illegal drug trade and illegal alien smuggling trade was included?

Not quite that good... Canada's is 1.5 times higher (CAN is in top 10, MEX is not). And the real difference becomes apparent when you look at it per capita (divided amongst the entire population): Canada's is over 4.5 times higher than Mexico's. Make no mistake, the Mexican people are very poor.

I think you may have been thinking of GDP translated into Purchasing Power Parity, which is a different sort of metric.

Oops, am used to pulling that list up instead of the nominal GDP.

Regarding the actual Mexican people, as a whole, they don't really qualify as "very poor" on a global scale, and I'd imagine there's room to make a lot of money if you go for the whole "exploitation of the masses" line, especially with monopolies.

I have to agree with you there. And you're right, I shouldn't have said "very" poor.
