Time's up for dial-up
Source: PC Pro
___________ Dial-up is on its last click, hiss and whistle. An estimated 1.4 million UK homes have abandoned their 56K connections in the past six months, leaving just 2.2 million narrowband users nationwide. And according to the Point Topic survey, a third of those plan to ditch dialling in the next six months. If the trend continues there will be just 700,000 by the end of 2008. By 2010 dial-up is likely to have all but disappeared. |

Activation fees, lock ins and the lack of true "no commitment" pay as you go are still a boat anchor against broadband adoption by the light/occasional users. Maybe 3G and (at a pinch) GPRS would do, but their charges tend to be uncompetetive.
