Blu-ray v. HD DVD: Where do we stand?

Source: News Blog (News.com)
__________
The expected next-generation DVD format war isn't quite the deadlock many expected.

Target's announcement Thursday that it would sell a Sony Blu-ray player in its stores alongside Blu-ray discs in a special feature promotion is important because the second-largest retailer in the U.S. doesn't sell HD DVD players in its stores, outside of the external HD DVD drive made for Microsoft's Xbox 360. It does sell a Toshiba HD DVD player on its Web site, however.

When the battle between the competing optical disc formats--HD DVD and Blu-ray--began brewing last year, analysts predicted protracted trench warfare, many refusing to choose sides. But just six months after the first Blu-ray players went on sale, the numbers show that the fight may be nearing its conclusion.

Along with this, both Samsung and Sony have either dropped the price on, or have come out with cheaper units in the last little while that more directly compete with HD-DVD players. Toshiba's players are still cheaper, but both Sony and Samsung's lowest priced players are only $50-100 more where they were once $150-200 more.

Yes to try and undercut HD DVD. Pull HD DVD from the Market prices will increase since there would be no other options.

I wasn't aware that the porn industry had made a decision on which format to use... They ended up being what made VCR win over the Beta-Max. When they decide let me know because that will be the "victorious" unit.

If you think for a minute that Sony isn't offering money to these retailers (ala Blockbuster's revenue sharing) to pick sides, you need to remove your pink shades... It is pretty sad that retailers are going to decide the outcome of this "war" like white trash hookers instead of letting both formats battle it out fairly. Talk about "consumer's choice"... NOT!

And to those BR fanboys wishing for HD DVD to go away, let's see what happens once the BDA controls content, manufacturing and standards and no real competition exists. You'll be the same ones crying that "movies are too expensive" and "I'm on my 4th BR player but I need to upgrade again because the new BD-Java 42xxx12 is not offered on mine".

you guys really need to get a clue. prices arent going to go up or stay the same if hd dvd goes away. i dont now if it is ju8st hatred of sony or no clue to marketing. sony & everybody else WANTS everybody to buy blueray. period. the ONLY way that is going to happen is for prices to drop.
just take a look at vhs & dvd(&cd) & you will see how this will work.
as far as sony paying corps to push their product, i dont doubt that someting might be going on. if you think the other camp aint trying to then you got issues. what you guys again dont relise is that sony & everybody else has to VERY careful about how any possible kickback/payola is done because of all the other issues that have happened over these type of arrangement.

what a load of tripe. the consumer is deciding buy buying more blu ray products. having 2 formats is NOT good for the consumer as it actually keeps cost up as everybody from consumer on up is afraid to commit.
dvd & vhs did just fine without competition for years. duh.
most of the blue ray players out there are ps3(by far) so updating aint as big an issue as the hd dvd fanboys like to babble about. not that most peeps give a hoot anyway.
as for me & i waited until i saw wich one i though was going to 'win' & jumped(the $100 price drop helped). so i am not a 'fanboy' just made an informed choice.

LMAO

You really think prices would have gone down as fast as they have if it wasn't for HD DVD ? Yeah, right, I'm sure Sony is looking out for the good of its customers, with their DRM of the week, fake movie critic of the year, fake fan website of the month, rootkit of the quarter and propaganda of the decade... That's definitely a company I want to be in control of the next movie format...

Okay...

Example I have two stores.

Store A has four items for sale.
Store B has seven items for sale.

Which store is going to sale more items?

Store B is because it has a bigger selection of items.

However, why does Store B have a bigger selection of items?

Secondly, I never bought any of the Sony consoles. So I have to now because they're trying to shove Blu-Ray down my throat? My choice as a consumer is dependent upon people who purchase Sony consoles? How absurd is that? See it's not about being fanboy it's about being a consumer.
