False alarm: Target's not giving up on HD DVD

As noted on Engadget HD the other day, and further clarified by Major Nelson this morning, that story about Target going exclusively Blu-ray was false. Turns out they're just installing Blu-ray aisle end caps, thanks to a new promotional deal with Sony, but HD DVD isn't going anywhere.

That was the point. I hate this strategy, everybody from governments to companies do this. It's disgusting.

What does that say about us, though? In this case it's more the news/media that are to blame, and us too, the readers. This news blazed out of control to every piece of news media there is, all of us thinking it was fact, repeating it as such to other sites/forums, when in reality it was an assumption of something bigger happening because of one change to a stores layout. Then we get another company deciding (or we assume is) doing the same thing, which essentially affirmed our assumptions that Target was 'in fact' doing the same thing.

How sad is that?

I rather not answer that question. I never gave damn about the original news item. In 10 years from now either of the two will be old news. In fact, both of them are obsolete as it is.

What drives me nuts is that the "news" media reported it as the end of HD DVD, however you can bet the house they won't peep a word about that being false in the 1st place...

Kind of like Fox news reporting Bush the winner, contrary to every other network, and then all the networks jumping the gun and following Fox's "news" as fact... Yeah, the WOW truly starts now.
