"300" Outlines HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc Differences
Source: DailyTech
________ This week’s home video movie releases will bring with it a disc that will clearly outline the differences in feature sets of HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. “300,” released on Tuesday, hits the market on high-definition with unequal releases. The rights to “300” belong to Warner Home Video – a studio that backs both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc – but the studio has graced the HD DVD version with several exclusive features that currently can be found nowhere else. |

i actually thought it was a difference that really mattered. why on earth would anyone want to ruin the experience of watching an awsome movie by having that funky crap running in splitscreen? or any movie for that matter. & being able to purchase their merchandise on the web....
while it is just an informed guess i would say that 90% of the peeps use of special 'features' involves watching deleted scenes/outtakes. of course there is the majority that dont make use of any of the extra 'features'. when it comes down to what is important, video & audio quality, they are identical. wich makes me crack up when fanboys push hard on one or the other. i just want there to be one. up to to the $499 ps3 i didnt really care that much(slight leaning towards bd because of extra capacity). but now i have made my choice & want hd dvd to go away. no offense to those of you who purchased the dark side

Interactive features will be added in profile 1.1 which i believe becomes mandatory in august. Though it has to be said some players may not be able to support the feature but would still be able to play back movies. The PS3 has all the hardware needed so hopefully that will support profile 2.0 (the online features).
So it is coming it will eventually become common place i expect in 2008 and the advantage hd dvd have will go away though you can argue that blu ray was released prematurely it was probably to stop hd dvd gaining ground. |

What I don't understand is why they just didn't include those features even though they aren't mandatory? Doesn't mandatory mean you have to use it? It sounds like the blu-ray players are capable its just they didn't want to include it.

i agree with you that it should have been included(&maybe it is) but the downside to quite a few blue ray decks is that their is no way to update firmware(unlike hd dvd).

Such an overhyped HiDef release, if you've seen it in the theatre you noticed the grainy effect added to the picture, this is retained for the DVD and it looks out of place IMO.

Which players are not able to be updated? I always thought that all of them had to have the ability to be updated.

They do I think some won't meet the hardware requirements for the next profile. PS3 on paper has all the requirements so we're hoping it will support these features. Not a big loss though otherwise

http://arstechnica.com/journals/thum...ncluding-grain On Ars they talk about the grainy effect too. I guess the director thought it looked cool. I haven't seen the movie yet so I can't give my opinion. If I remember correctly, wasn't there a grainy effect in Sin City? |

hmm as it stands from that release, it looks like the only benefit the BD release has is the 5.1 PCM audio… completely uncompressed, which will then be rendered completely useless for those using only a single optical connection (toslink/ac3/dts) for playback of audio
i haven't really made up my mind yet, we have no HD ready devices in this house, and no real need for any yet, so i'm going ot wait until these standards are actually finalised before choosing
