Michael Bay Responds to Paramount's Decision: "No Transformers 2 for Me!"

Source: Blu-ray.com
__________
The director behind such films as 'Bad Boys', 'Pearl Harbor', and the recent 'Transformers' movie is upset by Paramount's decision to drop support for Blu-ray. On a post on his personal web forum entitled, "Paramount pisses me off!", Michael Bay says, "I want people to see my movies in the best formats possible. For them to deny people who have Blu-ray sucks! They were progressive by having two formats. No Transformers 2 for me!"

He may have just done Transformers fans a huge favor by not doing the sequel

The movie was ok with some nice special effects and the transformers were great. I just didn't like the fact it took till around half way through the film for the transformers to appear (aside from the decepticons at the start), I felt there was too much focus on the whole boy and his car thing with a few american pie jokes thrown in for some reason.

As for this well the only change is that the blu ray crowd miss out on it. HD-DVD fans were going to get it anyway so it's anti consumer like this whole format war.

Transformers has grossed over $650 million worldwide and climbing, I'm sure Paramount would like a sequel from Bay. I hope other directors boycott making movies for Paramount as well.

WTH does the distribution medium have to do with a movie? And is this supposed to get people angry at Paramount?

It really doesn't matter if Bay or some other hack makes the sequel, it will be a huge hit either way.

Good lord look at the Blu-Boy comments on that site. No wonder I hate Sony so much.

Maybe it's good if Bay doesn't make Transformers 2. There are other, better directors out there who can make an even better Transformers 2.

Spielberg is "certainly a supporter of Blu-ray"

Quote:
Earlier today, Steven Spielberg's spokesperson and current member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Marvin Levy, was kind enough to speak to Blu-ray.com regarding Paramount's recent decision to exclusively back the HD DVD format and Mr. Spielberg's future involvement with high definition media. Mr. Levy did confirm for us that Mr. Spielberg is "certainly a supporter of Blu-ray" and communicated the Spielberg camp's excitement over the upcoming release of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', exclusively on Blu-ray.
Blu-ray.com

This is why you won't see Speilberg directed movies on HD DVD now.

Close Encounters is distributed by Columbia/TriStar (Sony), which is why it will not (yet) be on HD DVD. All other titles Spielberg titles distributed by Universal/Paramount/DreamWorks WILL be coming to HD DVD. Chances are, however, that they could also be released on Blu-ray as well if Spielberg wishes. But HD DVD is definite.

Overall, this announcement is a HUGE gain for HD DVD, and an unexpected loss for Blu-ray.

They are Speilberg's films not Paramounts, Universal, etc.

Today's announcement does not include films directed by Steven Spielberg as his films are not exclusive to either format.
Viacom

That's the last line in the press release.

Correct, which is why Spielberg currently prefers they be on both formats instead of just HD DVD.

Not according to a spokesman of Speilberg. Did you not read my post? Why would Close Encounters be an exclusive title if he prefers both formats?

It's an exclusive because it's distributed by SONY. Sony is Blu-ray exclusive.

By the way, Michael Bay now seems to like HD DVD. He just posted the following a short while ago:

Quote:
Last night at dinner I was having dinner with three blu-ray owners, they were pissed about no Transformers Blu-ray and I drank the kool aid hook line and sinker. So at 1:30 in the morning I posted - nothing good ever comes out of early am posts mind you - I over reacted. I heard where Paramount is coming from and the future of HD and players that will be close to the $200 mark which is the magic number. I like what I heard.

As a director, I'm all about people seeing films in the best quality possible, and I saw and heard firsthand people upset about a corporate decision.

So today I saw 300 on HD, it rocks!

So I think I might be back on to do Transformers 2!

Michael Bay

I'd like to see some recognizable transformers in the sequel. All the robots looked like a jumbled mess of spare parts and none of them except Optimus had a personality. That will never happen if Bay gets another chance...he likes to add "doodads" to the robots.
