Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means that AutoPatcher is probably history. As much as we disagree, we can do very little, and although the download page is merely a collection of mirrors, we took the download page down.

We would like to thank you for your support. For the past 4 years, it has been a blast. Unfortunately, it seems like it's the end of AutoPatcher as we know it.

I wonder what prompted this turnabout, as Microsoft representatives has commented approvingly on Autopatcher several times over the four years that have gone by. If at least it had coincided with a service pack release.

that's too bad it was a convenient way to bring a system up to date. Especially for those on Dial up or without Internet access. With AutoPatcher at least they had the chance to get the updates from another source.

Sorry for the length of this post.. but hell.. I'm so pissed off about this that it's just spewing out....

Microsoft security patches are freely available on their site with the exception of a few major ones. So why is Micosoft bitching? Because someone, other than them, had the brains to collect all the patches into one easy to use installer?

Now, I can see why MS has cause to bitch, and it's to do with the patches that aren't freely available. In those cases you needed to go through the WGA bull in order to download those, and this where MS' issue is. AutoPatcher bypassed the need for people to verify their system to get those files, and this is really benificial to those using pirated versions of an OS. All those updates, and they never have to verify their system. The only 2 exceptions would be WMP11 and IE7, both of which require WGA to be installed before they themselves will install or work. In this case I would be pissed to.

Someone posted on that site that it's been 3 years since Microsoft put out SP2. Since then we have a few dozen minor and critical updates, all of which take a lot of time to install, and one reboot after another. This is wasted time, and in my business time is money. If it is Microsofts intent to stop this kind of service, a service they are not paying for, yet they are largely benifiting from financially, then this stupidity just screams the need for another service pack. Clean up your mess by consolidating your fracking updates. But guess what? Even though we are getting SP3 for XP, all it's intended to be is an update to allow them to support more XP CDKeys, so that they can make more money off of XP. Microsoft has yet to announce any intention to include any of the security updates in it, and that is a slap on the face of their customers. Namely, us.

AutoPatcher is MS OS users response to their business practices. If Microsoft is unwilling to clean up their updates, both critical and minor, into one servicable package, then their users were going to do it for them. And they did.. at their own expense and time. Microsoft should be praising them just as those who use AutoPatcher day in and day out do. If it weren't for AutoPatcher I wouldn't make money.. or at least it would take 3x longer for me to make it. This thing saves me hours of tedious work. I build computers. My job isn't to fracking babysit the fracking machine while Windows updates itself for over an hour. So, to the AP team, thank you for making my life, and my job that much easier.

And to MS.. you know where you can stick my foot.

If MS cut Autopatcher because of DRM issues, they are really, really stupid. I used Autopatcher while I still used XP and I liked it. Easy-to-install and all patches at once. Really convenient

As for DRM issues I'd ask: WHAT DRM!?!?!?!? Theyr copyprotection SUCKS so much they can't even restrict ME from going to their site and downloading EVERYTHING I want. If I wanted, I could also access Bill's porn folder. I have Vista Ultimate, that didn't ask me key during install, that didn't ask me any activations and it has yet to fail any authentication processes. And where I got it? Downloaded straight from torrent during free leech of my favourite torrent tracker and burned it on DVD. Easy? Hell yeah! So Autopatcher bypassing their DRM was least of their worries. MS SUCKS!



Btw: I also have a legit Vista Ultimate, all paid and shit...It's just sitting unopened in my drawer and I haven't bothered reinstalling my Windows.

Correct. There's still about 3 or 4 updates that came out since, including an updated Daylight Savings patch. However, it still helps immensely.

Thankfully I grabbed every single version of AutoPatcher whenever it was released, for every OS, and even recent AutoPatcher Office addins for each Office version, so I'm set for long while.
