Spam now 83% of all email
Source: TechnologyExpert
_________ I'd hate to see what would show up in my inbox without filters. I use Gmail for everything, including retrievng email from alternate email accounts, and it does a fantastic job of filtering my Gmail. My wife, on the other hand, uses her own domain name for her emails, and despite the fact that she doesn't use it for shopping or mailing lists, she gets a pretty decent amount of spam. Small wonder, with 83% of email being comprised of spam. |

Spam, Phishing (there is an absolute barrage of Natwest Bank phishing spam doing he rounds now).
There is a blocking mechanism that works very well, one of my old ISPs used it and was 99,9% spamfree... DUL blocking, the ISP server will not accept direct sending from open userspace. A similar approach would be MX tracking, no need to invent any new parts of the protocol. Some exclusions would need to be made, but the number of legitimate mail senders without valid MX'ed addresses must be pretty small compared to the number of spambots. The problem would then most likely transfer to the numerous, poorly managed webmail hosts, though it would be no great loss to block them outright. It is getting to the point where something will have to be DONE, or you can kiss goodbye to email as a usable communications medium. The flip side, is that the acceptable level of "collateral damage" from spam filtering is rising.
