VIA launches K8T400M K8-supporting chipset

On top of its efforts dedicated to the new 400MHz FSB (front-side bus) Athlon XP processors, VIA Technologies on April 22 introduced its first K8 chipset, the K8T400M, hoping to defend its dominant position in the high-end Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)-platform market.

Nvidia, aggressive in expanding into the AMD chipset market in recent years, also launched its first K8 product, the nForce3 Pro, on the same day. Though both support AMD’s latest server and workstation-use Opteron processors, VIA’s K8T400M is a discrete product while Nvidia’s nForce3 Pro is an integrated, single-chip solution.

The K8T400M has entered mass production. According to VIA’s roadmap, its next K8-platform chipset will be the K8M400 integrated chipset, which will incorporate the UniChrome2 GFX graphics core and enter volume production in the third quarter. Sampling of a PCI Express-supporting K8 PCIE will follow in the fourth quarter.
