AMD adds a triple-core CPU to its roadmap
Source: Tech-Ex
________ AMD added a triple-core processor to their roadmap Monday, creating a lineup of multi-core CPUs which spans from dual- to quad-core processors. If this were baseball, AMD would have hit for the cycle, with single-, dual-, triple- and quad-core CPUs. The triple-core processor will carry the same Phenom brand as the quad-core desktop CPUs which are slated for release by the end of 2007. The triple-core processors are expected to be available in Q1 2008. Last edited by Iria; Sep 18, 2007 at 04:06 AM. |

As suggested, is it designed as a triple core, or is it a quad with a bad one disabled?

No clear saying on that yet and perhaps there won't be for some time, but I would be surprised if these are not coming out of the quad core manufacturing line. In contrast to Intel the AMD quad core manufacturing process has to make four fully working cores in one go, which makes a single faulty core a more expensive scrap. Either way I like the idea, but a dedicated three core design might be tough to get much profit out of.
