How much does the store owe this PC buyer?

Gone for good is seven years worth of correspondence between three generations of the buyer's family, as well as 2,000 e-mail addresses and all the administrative files for a fledgling news site. The stuff was on a drive that the store - not one of the big chains - tossed out instead of copying over to a new PC it sold a colleague of mine. (Yes, we beat him mercilessly for not backing it up.)

Your assignment here is to help determine proper compensation for this loss.

Did the family request the files be transferred? Was there a written proposal or quote that said the place would backup the files?

Things happen.. and it's very irritating when something should have worked and been done.. but someone in the mess of things screwed up...

IMO, something as critical should have been backed up... PERIOD..... you want it done right, do it youself.

Nothing is more irritating then receiving a machine where all the files are all the hell over the place.... USE YOUR "MY DOCUMENTS" folders please, everything is easily saved thier, create sub folders if you want to organize.. don't start saving files in the C/D/E drives in folders and sub folders all over the place.....

But i don't get WHY they would have thrown it out.... more likely Formatted the drive and using it as a second hand for a rebuild or parts...

IMO, i don't think compensation should be given, the store credit and 100 bucks off deal is pretty damn good as is.

I'm not going to demand money from someone else.. blame them, for my own mistakes. I had files a server quite a few years back, stopped backing my orginal up and just used the server file..... when i lost access to the server.... i didn't bitch at the host for not being able to get my files off it.
