Wal-Mart In-Store Special (Starting Friday!) - Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD Player for $98
Source: Tech-Ex
_______ This Friday, Wal-Mart has a sort of "early Black Friday." And if you want one of the remaining Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD players, you can get it for the bargain basement price of $98.87. Despite the fact that the A2 has been replaced by the A3, firmware upgrades will keep it current. As the ad says, while supplies last. |

any, ANY walmart DVD player under 40 bucks, or HD-DVD player i'd suspect under 100 bucks never has lasted any length of time.... hunks of garbage....

Wasn't that player $500 when it first came out?.. now down to $198 on closeout due to the A3?.. I think $98 is a pretty good deal actually. I'm pretty tempted at this price. The only HD movie I would buy would be the upcoming Bladerunner Ultimate package this Dec. The rest of the movies I'll rent from Netflix. I've been pretty sour on HD-DVD due to the cost of the movies.. but if I just get one to rent them $98 seems doable.

The only difference between it and the A3 is 1080P output. I've had mine for 3 months now and it's a great value and it's 1080i pic is superb. High Def for cheap. Grab it

Theres a reason it's cheap like this.. there has to be..... even if a newer model is availble, usually something like this doesn't drop that significantly without a DAMN good reason.....
It's no different then the other shotty poor quality garbage walmart buys up. Sure you'll get lucky, but quite often, it's far and few between... i betcha walmart didn't pay 30 bucks for that sucker.

My bet is Walmart is trying to get some early Black Friday sales before the other stores do the same thing. I assume the A2 is going to be that cheap everywhere. They are just breaking the sale out early. Man you are cynical Judas..

So, no one minds that it can't do 1080p?

However, I can't seem to find one up here. Seems to be a US only drop.

I have this player too - also bought it through Amazon for $230. So far it's been excellent paired with my CRT rear projection 1080i television (early adopter). 1080p does me no good. As far as the movies, I've been finding them for about $19.95 - certainly more than standard DVD, but not that much more.
Even so, I have to agree that most of the sub $80 stuff that walmart sells isn't very good...this player is an exception because Toshiba is pushing the format hard. Some people say they are aggressive, while other say they are desperate.
