Seagate CEO: Blu-ray won the battle but lost the war

Source: News.com
_________
The winner in the Blu-ray and HD DVD war is the hard drive, according to Bill Watkins, CEO of Seagate Technology.

"People are saying Blu-ray won the war but who cares? The war is over physical distribution versus electrical distribution, and Blu-ray and HD lost that," he said during a breakfast meeting at the Consumer Electronics Show here this week. "In this, flash memory and hard drives are on the same side. The war is over and the physical guys lost."

he may be right, but it will be years before it shows. wich means bd wil have already established itself long term - at least as long term as any tech can be anymore.

I agree that flash could over take physical discs but that will be several years before that happens. Prices for flash devices need to come done. If they can get 100 GB on up flash media out within the next 2 years and be under 100 bucks, hell even under 50 bucks, then there would be no need for consumers to use physical media.

interspaced is on a distinguished road

Think retailers like HMV and their empolyees might want a say in this.

That would still to be much for a flash drive.

You can buy a HD movie from around $25 for lower so anything higher would never take off.

Why? They already offer a download service for music.

Less overheads too. No rent/staff/bills. They are already tempting people to use the online service more with lower prices and free delivery. I guess downloads will be the next step as it eliminates the delivery charges. Bit shit really as ultimately it's going to mean the loss of jobs for store staff including some of my friends who suspect it's rapidly heading this way already.
