During Nvidia's fourth-quarter financial results conference call, Nvidia shed a little more light on its acquisition of Ageia and what it plans to do with the firm's PhysX technology. Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang made no announcements regarding the deal until asked in the question-and-answer session, but he was happy to divulge a decent number of details.

So what was the physics processing the 8 series already boasted? Software processing?
And yeah, PhysX is different i know that. Sounds like a pretty smart move from Nvidia if they can make it work with PhysX enabled titles without issue

I saw it coming, but what I didn't see was how quick the announcement would be, nor that they would incorporate it into their drivers to support existing hardware. For this announcement to have come this quick, and to be very specific on what they plan to do means that Nvidia has had something planned for a long time. Nvidia knew exactly what they were going to do with PhysX, how they were going to incorporate it long before they bought it. They probably even had some sort of implementation of this PhysX to Cuda thing already up and running months ago, even in a basic format (like a wrapper or something) to prove that they could do it.

As you said, interesting that they did so quickly. Either it was very easy to do so, or the were planning to buy ageia for some time now.

Thats been coming for a long time.... however PhysX is still a gimmick to me, I have used it in Ghost Recon and whatnot, wasnt real impressed by what it added... most of it looked overdone, and made the game even farther from reality... But good call on Nvidias part.

What I haven't been impressed with, as far as PhysX goes, is the way developers have been using it, and that is for simple particles. Only Cell Factor, which is a PhysX show piece, used more complicated particle physics. If you watch Ageias demos, or play Cell Factor, you can see what can be done with it. I think the most impressed I was with PhysX was with their demos that showed off fabric physics, and how simple fabrics flowed, tore, and so fourth. And these are no nonsense, low budget, unpolished demos too.
