To me, this was really the nail in the coffin. Toshiba was the one making all those dirt cheap HD-DVD players, without further production there's no hope for the format.
Great to see the wars are over and hopefully by the end of the year BluRay will be cheaper to get into

Well there now no competition, wich is bad, their now the "only game in town"
and thus you'll pay what ever they want or get nothing.... there is less pressure But the increse in volume that would help prices still wont happen untill prices lower as $399 is still a bit steap as it more expensive then say 90% of peoples tv's ![]() HDVD logially would of won being the devices are 1/5th the price and the media is cheaper. Their amazeing simular both use a blue lazer to store more data blue ray just held more data... The players will get lower in price but the movies well.. To bady sony got the big players to sign with blueray behind closed doors. So we could actually see who would have really won from a consumer standpoint with hdvd player heading into the sub $100 range theres no way a $400 player would have been able to compete in volumes... Basically everyone who owns and had player now just has a pretty upconverting DVD player as the movies will dry up after long...

it is amazing how peeple keep ignoring the past. dvd & vhs were both the 'only game in town'(there were other formats but none of them came anywhere near being mainstream). prices on both hardware & media went down pretty quickly after the 2nd year. it is easy to figure out to.
all the companies involved want bd players in eberybodys home & more impotantly, buying the movies. while it will take time, they will do everything in their power to make this happen. the early adopter rush is pretty much over, more peeps will be buying more hd sets now that prices have really dropped & there is a good selection of programming & networks over-air broadcasting available. more hd sets means more demand for bd players... by next xmas players will be under $200 & movies under$25 imo. folowing year will see prices similar to what dvd players/movies were 2 yrs ago. there will be a premium for hd stuff over dvd for 3-4 more years, but the diff will shrink & in 5-6 years dvd will be phasing out & we will be having this same discussion about whatever the 'new' format that was released in the previous year.

one angle I think time warner was looking at was piracy, well they underestimate
the power of the community. Since they figure at 50GB who could effectively share such media online? (Forgeting things like divix etc...) Quote:

So, I guess Sony final got their revenge after Beta and Minidisc.

Personally, I think its a good thing that HD DVD is dead (don't tell Craig). The "format wars" were only keeping people from adopting the new tech, and keeping company's from fully supporting either camp. Either way, the technology is better than DVD, and there is huge potential for storage in each, so it doesn't really matter to me who "won".
Sucks for those who adopted early, but sadly, thats what you have to expect, or at least accept, when getting into unproven technology. Plus, its nice for Sony that after all their failed formats (beta, minidisc, etc), they finally got one right. Sort of like giving an Oscar to a legendary actor for a movie that didn't quite deserve it, but because they were getting older and hadn't won it before. |

funny thing is blue ray and HD DVD are similar in theory, both are using blue lasers
to increase storage on the disk. So many people don't know that the same blue laser that named blue ray is present in hddvd. Why company's where able to put out combo drives so fast...
