When the Smoke Clears & Prices Settle: GeForce 9600 GT vs. Radeon HD 3870 @ Anandtech

Yesterday saw the introduction of NVIDIA’s GeForce 9 series of GPUs, starting with the GeForce 9600 GT. Carrying a MSRP of $169 - $189, the GeForce 9600 GT was designed to fill a void in NVIDIA’s product lineup. The GeForce 8600, NVIDIA’s original sub-$200 competitor was being sorely beaten by AMD’s Radeon HD 3850. The GeForce 9600 GT was introduced to rectify the situation.

Had the world remained the same, the GeForce 9600 GT would have competed with and done a good job of destroying the Radeon HD 3850. However, AMD didn’t remain still and quietly reduced the prices of its Radeon HD 3800 series GPUs in the channel. The GeForce 9600 GT no longer was a competitor of the Radeon HD 3850, but rather up against the 3870.

So, the 9000 series from Nvidia, do not support dx 10.1?

No, it does not.Since is just a revision of the old G92(wich is a revision of the G80), nVidia 9 series will be probably like HD3k is for ATi, it's actually the same chipset(but HD3k series have support for DX10.1, it doesn't make any real difference right now actually), we will have to wait for the G100 for DX10.1 i think.

ATi made a really good decision by dropping HD3850/70 prices. For the same price, ATI HD3870 is better than the 9600GT, and ATI will keep in the mainstream lead(if tou can call HD3870 a mainstream card, it was actually made as a high-end).Things are getting better for ATi, HD3870 competing with 9600GT, hd3870 X2 competing with Ultra. It makes nVidia make new cards, to compete, and at a low price, so who wins this fight is actually the gamer
