Final goodbye for early web icon

A web browser that gave many people their first experience of the web is set to disappear. Netscape Navigator, now owned by AOL, will no longer be supported after 1 March 2008, the company has said.

In the mid-1990s, as the commercial web began to take off, the browser was used by more than 90% of people online. Its market share has since slipped to just 0.6% as other browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox have eroded its user base.

The company recommends that users upgrade their browser to either Firefox or Flock, which are both built on the same underlying technologies as Navigator.

They should feed the customizations back into the Mozilla base, after all, Netscape is really only a tweak of Firefox anyway.

It appears the Netscape Link Pad is available as a Firefox addon - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6397

It can only be a matter of time before unofficial "Navigator revival" builds arrive, maybe not direct clones... keep the good ideas and throw away unnecessary branding.

I still miss the global network navigator services propitary web broswer
was bsed on IE download manager, tabbed browseing not bad for days
when 56k was off in the future... stuff we just got in the last few years

I never liked netscape , Firefox or Flock ek? not into those either
if i had to chose another it'd be opera
