Student Faces Expulsion Hearing for Facebook Study Group
Ryerson University cracks down on students studying online
Chris Avenir, a first-year chemical engineering student at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, is facing academic expulsion after being called out as the administrator for a Facebook-based Chemistry study group. Titled “Dunegons/Mastering Chemistry Solutions,” after a campus engineering study room dubbed “The Dungeon,” Avernir’s group had 146 other students who used it to swap tips on homework and test questions in the school’s chemistry program. My college had a pretty strict honor code. If you worked with someone on your homework, you had to cite them. Most classes that had multiple sections either tested everyone at the same time or changed the test for each class. They knew that students talk almost instantly after the classes to pass on what happened to later sections. If section A had a pop quiz, sections B-F knew about it and attendance skyrocketted. To get around this teachers usually fuck with people's heads and give the pop quiz randomly to certain groups and pick up the rest at a later date.
To anyone who's been in college, to think that test answers, homework answers, and advance knowledge weren't being passed around freely in a facebook group of 146 members... well that's naive.
