GeForce 9800 GX2 Quad SLI Round-Up

Today we evaluate the gameplay experience supplied by Quad SLI using two XFX GeForce 9800 GX2. We play Crysis, Jericho, & CoD4 to examine real-world advantages at high resolutions and compare the Radeon HD 3870 X2 CrossFireX & GeForce 8800 GTX SLI.

Quad GPUs - its the stuff that a gamers dreams were made of a couple of years back. However, with the release of dual GPUs on a single graphics card, both AMD and nVidia have managed to make it happen. In fact, nVidia has had some previous experience with their 7950GX2 and today, they tranfer that technology to the recently released game killer- the 9800 GX2.

Last week, we got a chance to look at the XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics card and found that it was a very powerful card for gaming. At the conclusion of that article we stated that we couldn't show Quad-SLI numbers as NVIDIA had them under NDA. The gag order has finally lifted, so we can share with you our thoughts on Quad-SLI with a pair of XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics cards and, of course, we also have a pair of ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 graphics cards for some Quad-CrossFireX testing to go along with them.

Last week, NVIDIA formally launched the dual-GPU powered GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics card and nForce 790i SLI Ultra chipset. We evaluated both of the products in depth in our coverage of the launch, but had to leave out one important detail per NVIDIA's embargo agreement - that being Quad-SLI.

Quad SLI is a familiar term to us - not only have we had to hear about for months building up to today's release but NVIDIA has tried this once before. The card of choice (well, really there was no choice) was the GeForce 7950 GX2 and the success of the platform was less than spectacular. After being met with lackluster performance results, small lists of compatible games and eventually complete abandonment at the hands of NVIDIA when Vista came in to the fray the company definitely needed to rethink things.

Review: PC Perspective

Sometimes it’s the little quirks in life that sneak up on you and change the way you look at the world. The past couple weeks have done that in testing all this new high end gear. Sure, we’ve had our problems testing bleeding edge stuff before, but in putting all of this from CrossFireX through 9800 GX2 Quad SLI to the test, we’ve gotten ourselves lost in some other dimension of existence. It’s the only explanation really. Like Holmes would have said … whatever remains, however improbable … But I’m getting ahead of myself.
