Spam blights e-mail 15 years on

Spam continues to blight e-mail exactly 15 years after the term was first coined and almost 30 years since the first spam message was sent.

The term is thought to have been coined by Joel Furr, an administrator on the net discussion system Usenet, to refer to unsolicited bulk messages.

More than 90% of all e-mail is spam, according to anti-spam body Spamhaus.

The nature of spam has also changed, with honest but misguided bulk mail of the early days, being replaced by 99.9% botnet/proxy spam for:
1. Little blue pills (real or fake)
2. Fake watches
3. Porn sites
4. Counterfeit software
5. Phishing
6. 419 fraud
7. Virus/worm attack (often to create further spambots)
Phishing IS a spam problem, though it is often treated seperatel, but if spamming is beaten, Phishing loses its main vector.
