ATI ships Radeon 9800 Pro 256 card

THE GRAPHICS BATTLE is keeping an entire army of spinners gainwardly employed, and the latest in the salvo of releases comes from Canadian firm ATI.
The firm said it's shipping its 256MB DDR-2 9800 Pro in limited quantities to OEMs, online, and to retail customers.

The memory gives, ATI claims, cinematic rendering on their PCs, and increases performance while preserving image quality.

It will cost $499.

ATI claims it was first to support DirectX 9.0 and OpenGL 2.0, and maintains it is the only graphics chip firm to give eight dedicated pipelines of rendering.

Later today it will be Nvidia's turn. And we're sure that it and ATI will be slogging it out at the E3 conference which starts in LA tomorrow. Like cuckoo clocks, expect the NDAs to start bursting any time soon.

I can remember just two years ago reading all the arguments that there would never even be any need for more than 64 MB of VRAM on a video card. I wonder what happened?
