Windows XP SP3: A quick, painless upgrade

On Monday, Microsoft released to manufacturers (RTM) the final code for Windows XP SP3. The upgrade provides support for WPA2 and the Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRP) used in Windows Vista, among other things. The public version will be available for download via the Web on April 29. Based on our initial installation, the upgrade will be effortless for most Windows XP users.

Push date, sometime in June, if I recall.

XP SP3 is four things.

1. A comprehensive rollup of updates, eliminating (for now), the forest of updates required when reinstalling, even with slipstreamed SP2.
2. When it becomes manadatory (and that will be some time after it is pushed), it will be the new baseline for updates, can't see Microsoft continuing to support SP2 for long after SP3 is fully deployed.
3. Some minor functionality updates
4. Inclusion of some optional / issue based patches in final form - WPA2 is currently an optional patch - 917021.
