Microsoft's piracy problem could grow

When it comes to software piracy, Microsoft may just be aiding the enemy.

Microsoft has been counting on gains against unlicensed software to boost revenue from the Windows unit, which accounts for a huge chunk of overall profits and sales. However, one of the company's own decisions could make its antipiracy battle more difficult.

I think MS is just using a simila trick as they did with DOS and earlier Windows versions. It's better for the OS to be installed in as many PCs as possible, even if the number of pirated copies is larger.

"Reduced functionality mode" was both unpopular and ineffective against piracy, so MS made the logical step. I believe that the warnings won't do any worse in preventing the piracy - if you buy a dirt cheap illegal copy (or download it), you'll never see either of the protection schemes. They only come into action if you do get your hands on someone else's legal copy and install, but fail to activate it, and in some regions, that may be more difficult than finding a pirated version.
