Japan's Cigarette Machines Using Facial Recognition Software

While some agencies, including the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) are experimenting with facial recognition software to prevent terrorism, Japan has a more mundane use for it: preventing underage buyers from using cigarette vending machines.

wonder what else they are useing facial recognition for then? if the tech has found it way into eveyday consumer life it almost has to be being used behind the scenes for various things. Are security cameras a common thing in Japanese cities?

That's a good question, [hobo]eclipse.

Also, this system will never be 100% accurate. There is no way of telling whether someone is 17 or has turned 18 two months ago. Also, I know a few people that have reached 19 or early twenties still looking like they are no more than 16. Facial recognition is an interesting idea, but if they want to be accurate then a person should produce a document (such as drivers license) from which age could be verified, and then the machine should compare the picture on the ID with the face of the person.

What if it compares the face to a database of identification?
