Intel to announce Springdale chipset Wednesday

Intel will unveil its newest chipset for premium desktop PCs on Wednesday, according to a source with knowledge of the company's plans.

Intel's 865G chipset, formerly known as Springdale, will be the second desktop chipset introduced this year by the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company to support an 800MHz front-side bus and DDR400 (double data rate) memory. The 865G also features Intel Extreme Graphics 2, an upgrade of the integrated graphics technology found in other Intel chipsets.

The 875P chipset, once known as Canterwood, was launched along with a 3GHz Pentium 4 processor in April. A glitch in that processor that did not affect the chipset delayed shipments for a week.

An Intel spokesman could not be immediately reached for comment.

The company is expected to release a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 processor in the coming weeks, and later this year will launch Prescott, its next generation desktop chip. Prescott will be built on 90-nanometer process technology, and will be used with the 865G chipset.
