As more and more capability is built into the storage controllers on motherboards, life has become more difficult for purveyors of RAID add-in boards. Companies like Promise and HighPoint built pretty healthy business building compact boards that added RAID functionality through low-cost IDE drives. Then Intel, Nvidia, and others added pretty robust RAID feature sets to their I/O controllers.
