VelociRaptors In RAID 5, A Case Study In Speed

If you were the type to think of 2.5" drive technology only in terms of notebook products, then recently, Western Digital probably helped expand your horizons a bit. With the release of their VelociRaptor 300GB SATA hard drive, mainstream users were exposed to the advantages of the high transfer rates associated with 2.5" platters rotating at 10K RPM, with four access heads pulling data. Though packed in a 3.5" form-factor for desktop system compatibility, the 2.5", dual 150GB platter platform that the VelociRaptor was built on allows it to outperform virtually all standard 3.5" SATA drives on the market today, even WD's 10K RPM Raptor WD1500 series.

nice results..

but they are still far lower then that of the seagate 7200.11's performance (and yes i know these are 2.5" drives not the 3.5")

still the newest WD drives haven't beaten the 7200.11's i've been running..

It's almost a year since the 7200.11's have come out..

where the 7200.12s... wonder what they'll be packing

Whoa... few points to clear up:
  • All the velociraptors are 3.5" drives, it's just the internal platters which are smaller.
  • This test showed 3 drives in RAID 5, obviously it's going to be slower than your 6 drives in RAID 0.
  • Velociraptor drives beat 7200.11 drives in pretty much every performance benchmark. (See here.)

sorry got confused.

and so sorry...

they don't beat the 7200.11s

i've had 3 7200.11's in raid 5 with 3 of the drives (500gb)

the 7200.11's scored a continous 300+ MB/s average and random access time of 7.4

Bursts in excess of 2000+ using intel ICH9R

at thier lowest point (end of the drives) they tappered off to a read speed of 292MB/S... thier highest point was 360MB/S

the Single 7200.11's still score in excess of 115-120MB/S read speeds well for me anyways... i see a number of reviews that show the 7200.11's as low as 90MB/s with access times ranging up into even the 10's occasionally. Frankly i'm confused by how this is possible without somehow ending up with bad drives (unlikely) or using a sata controller that just isn't doing it justice.... which is even more confusing considering that the ich9r chipset is one of the best IC's but it shouldn't be able to beat out the performance of a truely 100% hardware sata solution.. or should?
