Will Californians "Hang Up" on New Cell Phone Laws?

Californians, it's here. July 1st, and new laws about making calls while driving. For teenagers, it's a much more restrictive law: no calls while driving until 18 - period. For others, no calls unless you are using a headset or other hands-free setup.

i'm not too fond of this new law imposed upon us Californians. Like the national airwaves thing that's going to be happening this coming feburary nationwide, the government, state government rather, should give us all some kind of rebate form of some kind for us to purchase a hands free device. that's just how i feel.

i for sure as hell not going to be following this law. it's rather ludicrous (sp?) IMO. there are other things that are far more dangerous than talking on your cell phone while driving. you know, things like changing the radio station, putting on a new CD, eating while driving, lighting up a cigarrette (if you smoke), looking at your navigation system, etc. why aren't laws on such things imposed on things like this and not specifically target people on cell phones.

window tinting your front windows is also illegal here in california also. before the month is over, i'll get my car's windows tinted so i can't be seen using my cell phone. a $10 fix-it ticket is much easier to deal with than a lame $50 "cell phone" ticket.

It just makes me

Haha genius xD
This new law doesn't make any sense to me, so under 18s aren't allowed to make any calls full stop. But they're allowed to use a headset? Christ make up your freakin mind

Why should the government give you a rebate for a hands free device when the phone already comes with one? Most cell phones come with a wired earpiece.

I do understand your pain though. Here in Chicago we've had this law in effect for over a year. I've had several friends get pulled over and ticketed because of it. I think the law causes more problems because now you have people trying to use their phones inconspicuously which causes sloppier driving.

And now they're trying to pass a law here the makes it illegal to cross the street while talking on a cell phone. Soon you're going to need a permit to fart, I fear. *sigh*

Is it really that bad to ask you to not use your phone while driving? Why not watch tv too?

not all phones come with a hands free device. for example, my motorola q didn't come with a hands free device. they sold one to me when i first purchased my phone. i've used it before, and the quality on it is horrible. people find it difficult to hear me, and i find it difficult to hear people. i don't plan on purchasing a new one either. i don't feel like spending $60+ on a device that i'm not sure if it will be good quality or not. especially when those $60 is hard for me to come by. i'm pretty sure i'll be one of those "inconspicuous" drivers myself because of this law. but that's why i'm going to get my windows tinted like i said in my previous post. it's easier to deal with a "fix-it ticket" than this new cell phone ticket. and it'll be cheaper too if i were to happen to get caught. $10 > $20 or $50.

i do believe that they have also pushed this law along side the "can't walk across a street and be on a phone call" law as well, but that is more for minors, 18 and younger. i don't have a problem with that, but i still feel that is rather ridiculous.

seriously, if the united states is considered "the land of the free" why do i not feel so "free" with so many bogus laws?
