Vista SP1 vs XP SP3 Comparison
Since I ran the comparisons on the service pack updates for Windows Vista and Windows XP I thought it might be interesting to combine those results into one brief article comparing the two and see how they stand up against each other. I had a few comments and emails about comparing them so I thought why not, and besides I was curious myself...

I think I'd rather see benchies where it would benchmark XP Sp2 and Vista with no Service pack as well

I was thinking the same thing. I know that one big change that SP3 has is it includes the KB896256 hot fix by default, which increases performance on dual core machines. Originally it was an optional install. It's probably why some of the comparative benchmarks between XP SP2 and Vista that were CPU based were so bad before, yet now they are much more even. It's also probably the reason why XP SP3 seems to be faster than XP SP2 in some cases, but slower in other cases.

Sp3 on some older machines... specially single core cpu's have suddenly taken a dump in performance i've found... and have had call ins due to it.
pumping up the physical ram has helped considerably.... but it's still slower....

Actually, if you have a machine that you can test out, Judas, you can disable that specific hotfix via the registry if it's enabled. It would be interesting to see if that is the specific cause of all the slowdowns on single core machines. |

I can give it a go...... but it'll be awhile as the machine i have for screwing around with has well... .been.... thoroughly screwed around with to the point of having to do a reinstall..
I think i had tried the hotfix reg hack before to forcefully disable it... but i'm pretty sure that while things did "somewhat" improve.... it's still slower overall then before.... which is really unfortunate for people running on older OLDER machines
