Tweens and teens are pushing parents to adopt text messaging so they don't have to talk "live" over the cell phone, according to mobile phone executives.

texting is easier, and its alot harder to get caught in class with it vs calling someone which is almost guaranteed failure in that situation

As Kris said, it's often more practical, that is whenever one needs to pass or ask for a simple information, and isn't in a comfortable position to talk, or isn't sure if the other person is, which is the case most of the time: at work/school, in public transport, outdoors...
